The family name was originally Allton; some descendants chose to use the alternative spelling of Alton. When Elliott married Elizabeth in 1850, his surname was spelled Allton, and Allton was also entered in the 1880 census. In other records his surname was spelled Alton.

The following brief obituary was published in The Quill , Tuesday, August 28, 1906.

A Pioneer Dead.

Charles Elliot Alton died at his residence near Fountain Green, yesterday morning at 9 o'clock. He was one of the pioneers of Hancock county and had reached the advanced age of eight-four years. A wife and several children survive him.

Another obituary was published in The Carthage Republican:

Charles Elliott Alton

Charles Elliott Alton died in Fountain Green, Hancock Co, Illinois, on August 27, 1906, aged 84 years. He was one of a family of eleven children. He came to Fountain Green, Hancock Co, Illinois, from New York with his parents in 1836.

On June 20, 1847, he was married to Miss Sarah Allman, who died September 20, 1848, having left a son, Miles, who died in November of that year.

In 1850 Mr. Alton was married to Miss Elizabeth Gardner. They settled on a farm near LaHarpe, Hancock County, Illinois, and lived there until 1856, when they moved to Fountain Green township. They bought land that was partly improved with a log house on it where they lived for 10 years.

Later they bought another farm in the same township where Charles Elliott resided until he died on August 27, 1906.

He is survived by his wife and their five children, Charles, Mary Champlin, Jane Vincent, Kate Strong, and Marcus.~This second obituary displays the common misstatement regarding his place of death - Fountain Green rather than Fountain Green Township. And both obituaries exhibit the common, curious and confusing practice of reversing given and middle names.
