John Lewis Fehliman (as he is listed in family documents) was born in Thun, Bern, Switzerland to Jakob and Maragritha (Lederach) Fahlimann. On 17 April 1854 he arrived in New York, New York with his mother, one brother Rudolf Robert and one sister, Maria, on board the "Lochinvar" that had departed from Le Havre, France, John was 20 years old. The trip took a total of 80 days travel. The family settled near Stryker, Williams, Ohio and John had purchased a 100 acre farm that was located about six miles southeast of town. He married Catherine Seaser on 30 April 1857 in Bryan, Ohio. Together they had four children: Catherine Anna; Mary Margaret, Christina Louise and John Lewis. On 5 October 1861 he enlisted for three years, Company D, 38th Regiment, Ohio Infantry and was promoted to Corporal the same day. He was described as 5 foot, 10 1/2 inches, hair brown, eyes gray, and complexion fair, occupation: farmer. He was killed in action at the storming of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on 25 November 1863. John had two brothers who also served during the war, Robert and Frederick, both survived the war. He was originally buried in the city of Chattanooga, but was re-interned to Chattanooga National Cemetery 25 November 1865.
