He was the son of Patrick and Alice Unknown McGinnis.

Nicholas was born in County Down.

He first married Ann 'Anna' Doran about 1854 in probably New York City.

Nicholas and Ann had 3 children: Alice McGinnis McCune (1854-1937); Sarah Ann McGinnis Maloney (1855-1902) and Bridget 'Biddie' McGinnis Bowers (1858-1945). Alice and Sarah Ann were born in New York City - Bridget was born in Indianapolis.

After his first wife died in June 1863 Nicholas sent the children to a Catholic orphanage in Vincennes, Indiana. They stayed there until he married again on July 31, 1865 to Mary Hopkins in Indianapolis.

Nicholas and Mary had 4 children: Thomas Patrick McGinnis(1868-1935); Clara McGinnis Combs (1871-1932); Frank Nicholas McGinnis (1873-1929) and George Barlett/Bartlett McGinnis - never married (1876-1899).

Nicholas purchased Sec 6B, Lot 443 at Holy Cross Cemetery to bury his first wife, Ann. Later his daughter's husband, Thomas McCune, died and Nicholas let Alice bury her husband in the family plot.

Nicholas purchased another plot (Sec 4F, Lot 307) when his second wife, Mary, died and buried her there. When Nicholas died a place was dug by his first wife, Ann, but his children by his second wife, Mary, got upset so he was buried in Sec 4F, Lot 307 with his second wife. There is no marker for Nicholas or Ann or Mary.

When Nicholas' daughter, Alice McCune, died she was buried in Sec 6B, Lot 443 with her husband and her mother. There is no marker for Alice or her husband, Thomas, either.

Nicholas was a tailor.

He died at age 73 years 10 months 26 days.
