"He enlisted in the Civil War during the summer of 1861. Served in the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry until the end of the war. He was Regimental Comissary Sergeant. Assisted in the capture of Jefferson Davis and received honorable mention from President Lincoln. He fought in the battles of Kenesaw Mountains and Lookout Mountains, as well as in other engagements during his three and one-half year service.
All of his seven children were born in the Township of Richmond, McHenry County, Ill. In 1883, they moved to Burton Township and always lived in the vicinity of Spring Grove, Ill.
