DEWITT COFFMAN BEERY

The subject of this sketch was the youngest of a family of fifteen children, the son of John K. and Magdalene Beery, all of whom have preceded him in the passing. He was born February 27, 1846, at Edom, Rockingham County, Virginia, and passed away October 24, 1934, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B.H. Anderson, in Bolivar, Polk County, Missouri. He united with Christian Union church in early life, but later in life united with the M.E. Church South and remained a faithful member of that church until the end. On February 20, 1866, he was united in marriage to Anna Brunk, and to this union were born eleven children, one of whom passed away in infancy. His companion passed on to that Heaven of rest ten years ago. In 1872 he moved with his family to Ray County, Missouri. Later he moved to Vernon County and in 1880 he moved to Cedar County and settled at his present homestead near Jerico Springs, where he reared his family to manhood and womanhood, and saw them all safely in the fold of his church, and three of them are ministers in the church.

He leaves behind to mourn their loss, ten children, four sons and six daughter, as follows: Joseph W. of Atwood, Colo.; Rev. Gunning C. of Columbia, Mo.; Rev. Dewitt A. of Alderson, W. Va; Rev. John K. of San Antonia, Tex.; Mrs. B.H. Anderson of Bolivar, Mo.; Mrs Viola Frieze of Jerico Springs, Mo.; Mrs. B.F. Melcher of Warrensburg, Mo.; Mrs A.C. Thurman of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; Mrs. R.A. Ryan of Big Timber, Mont.; and Mrs Jessie Lester of Springfield, Mo. He also leaves thirty-three grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends. His funeral was conducted Friday, October 26, at the Methodist church in Jerico Springs by W.S. White of Bolivar and Rev. J.R. Hargis of Springfield, and his body was laid to rest beside that of his companion in the cemetery at the place under direction of the White & Erwin Funeral Home of Bolivar.
