Jack was the second of seven children born to Mary Ann Hanks and James F. Kent. He married Lucille Ferran May 1935 They had 15 children. The first two daughters died in infancy.

During WWII, Jack entered the U.S. Army on 31 Jan 1944. After the war, he was a civilian Fireman at Fort Benjamin Harrison until his retirement.
