Occupation:
Hospital Steward/Drugist
in the United States Army.

Stephen Lansing Niles was the eldest son of John S. Niles (1807-1863) and Elizabeth Lilly (1810-1884). He was born 6 February 1836 in Leon township, Cattaraugus County, in western New York. His parents were farmers as were most people in that time period. In 1850 the family was still living in Leon township. By 1855 the family had moved to Windsor Township, Dane County, Wisconsin. In 1858 Stephen's brother, Henry "Sherman" Niles, married Mary Ann Sullivan in Dane County, Wisconsin.

In 1860 Stephen Lansing Niles & Henry "Sherman" Niles (& "Sherman's" wife, Mary, and daughter, Cora Virginia, and Mary's sister, Sarah Sullivan) are living in Liberty, Scott County, Iowa.

The Civil War broke out on 12 April 1861. On 27 May 1861 Stephen enlisted in Company B, 2nd Iowa Infantry at Keokuk, Iowa. He served as a hospital nurse & clerk for the surgeon-in-chief in Tennessee & Kentucky. On 28 July 1864 he was honorably discharged out of his Iowa regiment in Atlanta, Georgia to be appointed a hospital steward in the U.S. Army.

According to family lore, Stephen married Sarah Ann Sullivan, sister of his brother's wife, on 23 January 1867 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, by an army chaplain. From 1870-1874, he and Sarah lived at Windsor, Dane Co., Wisconsin. On 30 August 1872, daughter Nora Evelyn Niles was born. On 14 January 1874, Stephen reenlisted as a hospital steward.

In 1875 Henry "Sherman" Niles died, leaving his wife, Mary, with six children, the youngest just 5 months old. In 1880 Stephen bought a house in Windsor, Wisconsin for "Sherman's" widow, Mary Sullivan Niles, and children to live in.

Stephen lists his occupation as a druggist on 15 January 1879 at Mount Vernon Barracks, Mobile County, Alabama. In 1880 he is stationed at Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, Boston, Massachusetts.

Stephen was stationed at Fort Totten, Benson Co., North Dakota from 24 October 1883 until he retired 20 Dec 1890. Mary Ann Sullivan Niles, and children were living with Stephen & Sarah Sullivan Niles while he was at Fort Totten, & maybe earlier.

In 1897 his wife, Sarah Sullivan Niles, died in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin of heart disease. She was buried with other Niles at Windsor, Dane County, Wisconsin. Stephen was living at 213 Graham St., Milwaukee, in 1898.

In June, 1900, Stephen is living in Buckeye Township, Shasta County, California with daughter, Nora, and "adopted" great niece, Charlotte Robinson, whose mother, Anna Niles Robinson, had died a few years earlier in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In his military pension application, Stephen states that all his personal papers, including the Niles Family Bible, were destroyed by fire in Redding, Shasta Co., California on 31 July 1900. Stephen's brother, Aaron Niles, was living near Redding in 1900.

In 1904 Stephen was living at 131 Carrillo St., Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., California, possibly at his daughter's house.

Stephen's daughter, Nora Niles, married Edward Harvey Rackliff circa 1903. Nora Niles Rackliff was still living in Santa Rosa Township in 1910. Nora later relocated to Yolo County, California. Nora had children: Nelda, Randall & Harold. Nora died in 1927 and is buried in Capay Cemetery, Esparto, Yolo County, California.

Stephen Lansing Niles died 22 September 1905 at Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California. He is buried in Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California.
