Deputy Controller Nearly Quarter of Century Expires at Age of 80.

Charles Edward Troxell, 80, for almost 25 years deputy controller of Cambria County, and one of the best-known residents of Northern Cambria County, died at 8 o'clock last evening at his Ebensburg home. Mr. Troxell has served two three years terms as a county prothonotary and was chief clerk in the county commissioners' office eight years before becoming deputy controller. He held the last position until April 1, 1940, when ill health forced his retirement. Born in White (now Reade) Township August 9, 1860, a son of Alexander and Matilda (Gates) Troxell, he was one of a family of 11 children. Mr. Troxell's parents were members of pioneer families in Central Pennsylvania. Charles E. Troxell acquired his education in the common schools. He spent six years as a teamster, and later was employed for three years as a coal miner. In 1890 Mr. Troxell and G. L. Glasgow engaged in the mercantile business of Glasgow and Troxell. Seven years later this partnership was dissolved when Mr. Troxell purchased the business of A. J. Willhide of Glasgow, which he conducted until December 1901. In the autumn of 1901, Mr. Troxell was elected to the office of prothonotary of Cambria County. He served two terms as prothonotary, remaining in office until 1908. Prior to his election to the office, he was prominent in politics in Reade Township and for a time was constable there. In 1894 he was elected justice of the peace, and held that office until elected prothonotary. After serving his terms as prothonotary, Mr. Troxell became chief clerk in the county commissioners office, a position he retained for eight years. After a short interval he was chosen deputy controller. In 1897, Mr. Troxell married Susan Glasgow of Reade Township. Surviving are his widow and these children; Ralph Troxell, Glasgow; Mrs. May Kuhn, Juniata and Mrs. Hilda Jones, at home. There are six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are these brothers and sisters; Mrs. Emma Fleming, Beaver Valley; Mrs. Rebecca Peterson, Juniata; B. F. Troxell, Flinton; C. J. Troxell, Glasgow; Mrs. Mina Sneath, Flinton; C. L. Troxell, Lakemont; Mrs. Margaret Cornelius, Cresson; Mrs. Nancy Thomas, Blandburg and C. A. Troxell, Johnstown. A sister Mrs. Sarah Beers of Ashville, passed away about three years ago. Funeral services will be conducted probably Wednesday, in Ebensburg Congregational Church, of which Mr. Troxell was a member, by Rev. John R. Thomas, D. D. pastor. Interment will be Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow.

Rites Tomorrow for Charles E. Troxell
Funeral services for Charles Edward Troxell, 80, former Cambria County official whose death occurred at 8 o'clock Sunday evening, will be conducted at 1:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in Ebensburg Congretional Chruch by Rev. John R. Thomas, D. D. pastor. The remains will be removed to the church at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow. The office of County Controller Dennis L. Westrick, where Mr. Troxell was employed until April 1940, will be closed tomorrow afternoon for the funeral. Mr. Troxell was deputy county controller for almost 25 years.
