Essie Gladys, daughter of James and Mattie Rigney, moved from Oklahoma to Florida at a young age with her parents, two brothers and one sister. She was married to Samuel Ford Butler on Feb. 1, 1930 at Miami, FL. To this union were born four children. After living many years in Coral Gables and Clermont, FL, Sam and Essie moved to Duluth, GA to be near a daughter.

Mrs. Butler passed from this life at Atlanta and was laid to rest at Reidsville City Cemetery, Reidsville, Tattnall County, GA. Surviving to mourn her loss were her husband, Sam, of the home, two daughters, DeLois Butler and Lorraine Howard and her husband, Carl, two sons, Cranston and Frank, three grandchildren, Brenda Howard and Troy and Debbie Butler, two brothers, Elza and Harry, both of Florida, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, an infant sister, one other sister, Pearl (Mrs. Kirk) Latimer, Foss, OK, and one grandson, Steve Howard, a brother-in-law, Kirk Latimer, and a sister-in-law, Kathleen (Mrs. Harry) Rigney.
