James Edgar, son of James W. and Mattie (Keeton) Rigney, came from Johnson County, TX to Oklahoma in a wagon train with his parents, grandparents and other relatives. The families settled in Washita County. In the winter of 1900 an epidemic of unknown nature took the lives of many, including young James, his infant sister and his maternal grandfather, Bird Keeton.

The grieving parents buried their children at Sod Cemetery northwest of the town of Cordell. Surviving, in addition to his parents, were one sister, Pearl, his paternal grandparents, Harrison and Sarah Rigney, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Over the years these two small graves were lost, but many years later small markers were placed in Sod Cemetery near the spot remembered by their surviving sister. (This sister, Pearl (Rigney) Latimer, is buried at Page Cemetery, near Foss, Washita County, OK. The parents and two brothers are buried at Greenwood Cemetery, near Groveland in Lake County, FL.)
