Titusville Herald, Titusville Pa., Tuesday, Sept 21 1886:
" MR. JOHN THEOBALD DEAD
He Passes Away Peacefully at Half Past One this Morning
Mr. John Theobald expired at his residence on South Franklin street at about 1:30 this morning of inflammation of the bowels. He was aged 54 years.
His illness began at noon one week ago Sunday. He sank very rapidly for a few days, and Friday night his death was momentarily expected. He rallied, however, and gave indications of recovery until Sunday night, when a turn for the worse took place, and it became evident that his last hours on earth had arrived. His senses remained acute until 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, when consciousness deserted him entirely, in which state he remained to the time of his death.
He died peacefully, surrounded by his family - wife, three sons and two daughters, who are left to mourn his loss.
Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made. When completed they will be duly announced.
Mr. Theobald was born in Prussia in December, 1832 [1831], and came to this country in 1852. He went into the shoe business at Pithole, from which place he came to Titusville in 1866 and opened up a hotel on Franklin street, where the Brewell Block now stands. Later he went into the refining business, which he followed for about two years. He then removed to Petroleum Centre, where he kept a hotel, and from there returned to Titusville in 1872 to take charge of the brewery which now bears his name.
Mr. Theobald was a charter member of Branch 1, C.M.B.A., of this city, in which society he carried life insurance of $2,000. He was also a member of Chase Post, G.A.R., and served for 3 years in the City Councils.
The bereaved family will have the full sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction. Mr. Theobald was always known as a kind father, an indulgent husband, an upright, energetic, enterprising business man, and generous to a fault. His was a genial, whole-souled nature that had found a place in the hearts of all Titusvillians and won the esteem and respect of all with whom he came in contact. His demise will cause widespread and sincere regret. The Herald joins in sympathizing with the family and relatives of the departed."

Titusville Herald, Weds., Sept 22 1886:
" THE LATE JOHN THEOBALD
The flag over Grand Army Hall was floating at halfmast yesterday in respect to the memory of the late John Theobald, whose death it was the sad duty of the Herald to chronicle yesterday morning. The funeral will take place at _ o'clock tomorrow, Thursday, morning, from St. Titus' Church, and will be in charge of C.M.B.A. Lodge No. 1, of this city, of which the deceased was the first treasurer. Chase Post No. 50 G.A.R. will also attend in a body.
A sketch of Mr. Theobald's life was given yesterday, but, hurridly obtained and written as it was, some addition to it, especially as concerns his war record may be made.
He enlisted for the first time in the 64th N.Y. Vols., the same regiment of which Dr. G.W. Barr, Louis Schlehuber, and his brothers, Peter and Wendel Theobald were members. This was in Sept. 1861. Receiving an honorable discharge he re-enlisted in the 98th regiment forming at Buffalo, in 1864, and of which Jos. Hoenig of this city was a member. In all he served over three years, his services concluding with the end of the war, and he was one of the early members of Post Chase."
