M. O. ECKLER, AGED CITIZEN DIED TODAY

M. O. Eckler, one of Galena’s oldest and best known citizens, died at about 12 o’clock today at his home on Joplin street, in Spring Grave, of apoplexy. He experienced the first attack last evening and never regained consciousness.

Yesterday, it is stated, Mr. Eckler appeared to be in perfect health. Last evening after milking the family cow, he started for the house but before he reached the door, he began staggering. He was assisted in the house by his son and he informed Mrs. Eckler that he was going to die. After this he was unconscious and passed away peacefully.

Mr. Eckler was slightly over 70 years of age and came to Galena with his family something like fifteen years ago. He was a native of Kentucky and, like the average Kentuckian, was boastful of the fact. He enlisted in the civil war from that state and fought with the winning side. After his service in the army, he was honorably discharged but one of the misfortunes of his life was the loss of his discharge papers.

Mr. Eckler is survived by his wife, one son John, and six daughters as follows: Misses Randa and Bessie Eckler, Mrs. Charles [Belle] Rhodes (Sic: Rhoads), Mrs. Will [Lucy] Ferneau of this city, Mrs. Lyman [Rosa] Crane (sic: Crain), of Scammon, and Mrs. Will (sic: Mrs. Dewitt C Hicks—Anna], of Argonia, Kan.

At the time of writing, one of the daughters, Miss Bessie, was lying critically ill in the Jane Chinn hospital at Webb City where she was operated upon yesterday for appendicitis. With her is her sister, Mrs. Rhodes. News of Mr. Eckler’s death will be withheld from both of the daughters at Webb City as long as possible. It is believed the condition of his daughter’s health brought on worry which was largely responsible for the attack of heart trouble.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 o’clock tomorrow from the residence.

DEATH OF PIONEER CITIZEN

The entire community was saddened last Tuesday at 12:30 o’clock when the sad news was spread of the death of M. O. Eckler, one of Galena’s pioneer and well known citizens, at his home in Spring Grove. Death being due to apoplexy.

Mr. Eckler apparently seemed to be in perfect health last Monday evening, and as usual went to the barn yard to do the milking and after getting through started to the house but began staggering before he reached the door, and it was necessary for his son to assist him into the house. He then told his wife that his time had come to die, never again regaining consciousness until the end came.

He with his family came to Galena a number of years ago and have since resided in Spring Grove. He was 70 years of age, and was a native of Kentucky, of which fact he was ever boastful. He leaves to deeply mourn his loss a son, John Eckler of this city, and six daughters: Randa and Bessie Eckler, Mrs. Charles Rhodes, Mrs. Will Ferneau of this city, Mrs. Lyman Crane of Scammon, and Mrs. Will Hicks of Argonia, Kansas.

Funeral services were held at the family residence at 2:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. R. E. Maclean of the Methodist Episcopal church, interment taking place in the Oak Hill cemetery.
