86, Dies at Galena

GALENA, Kan.—John Luther Eckler, 86 years old, long-time resident of this area, died at 12:45 o'clock this morning at his home, 903 East Seventh street. He had been in failing health five years.

Born in Kentucky January 5, 1867, he came to this locality in a covered wagon with his parents when he was 11 years old, and resided near Columbus until 1898 when he came to Galena. He was employed as a teamster in this area until 1915 when he moved to a farm on Tennessee Prairie, south of the city, returning to Galena to reside in 1947.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Gertrude May Eckler of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Bessie Yates Brotherton of Joplin; two sons, John Milton Eckler of Los Angeles, Calif., and Richard Benson Eckler of Tennessee Prairie; two sisters, Mrs. Rosalee Crain and Mrs. C. J. Rhoades of San Antonio, Tex., and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral plans are in charge of the Poteet funeral home.

ECKLER FUNERAL

G A L E N A, Kan. — Funeral services for John Luther Eckler, 86 years old, who died Tuesday morning at his home, 903 East Seventh street, will be at 2 o'clock; Friday afternoon at the Poteet funeral home. The Rev. Walter Harvey of Baxter Springs will officiate and burial will be (sic) Oak Hill cemetery. Pallbearers will be T. H. Weakley, Ivan Murray, Joe Atkins, Joe Eiland, Dave Weir and Anderson Clevenger.

The body will lie in state in the chapel until the funeral hour.
