WM. LAWRENCE PHARR DEAD.
-----
Good and Useful Citizen of Mecklenburg Passes Away After a Long Illness--Red Men and Odd Fellows to Conduct the Funeral.

After a lingering illness of more than a year, Mr. William Lawrence Pharr passed away at his home on the Sharon road, at 6 o'clock yesterday morning. His death was not unexpected, but is nevertheless a grief to his loved ones and a host of warm friends united only by the circle of acqaintanceship.

For many years he suffered much with a malignant growth, which afterwards developed into cancer of the throat. The best that medical skill offered failed to block the progress of the disease, and as a last resort Mr. Pharr was taken to New York last spring for an operation. This afforded only temporary relief and finally hope was abandoned, though a delicate and difficult operation was performed at a local hospital last month for the purpose of prolonging his life. While this was in itself successful, the results were not as far-fetching as had been anticipated and he grew rapidly worse, death coming yesterday as a welcome relief to his suffering.

Mr. Pharr was in his 44th year. He was a son of the late Rev. Dr. Samuel C. Pharr and Mrs. Margaret Springs Pharr, and he was born at the old Springs homestead, where he died. He married Miss Lila Thompson, of Rowland, and she with one child, a little girl, are the immediate survivors. He leaves also a brother, Mr. Walter S. Pharr, and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Morrison, of Baltimore and Mrs. James P. Garner, of this city.

The greater part of Mr. Pharr's life was devoted to his farming interests, though he was a ....and four years ago he gave up his work on the farm and moved into the city, accepting a position with the Liddell Company. Two years ago his health forced him to give up other pursuits and he moved back to the farm.

He was a man of many splendid parts, and it is said of him that he had no enemy. Those who knew him loved him and they feel more deeply than words can express his departure from their midst. Long ago he accepted the inevitable with an abiding faith in his Creator and calmly faced the end a Christian, unafraid.

The deaceased was a lifelong member of the Second Presbyterian church and the funeral will take place from that church. Mr. Walter S. Pharr is in new New Orleans and has been notified by telegraph. If he arrives in fime the funeral will take place this afternoon. If not, it will be held Friday morning at 11 o'clock. Rev. Martin D. Hardin, D. D., will conduct the services at the church and at Elmwood the Red Men and Odd Fellows of which the deceased was a member, will have charge of the services, in accordance with their respective rituals.
