Son of C. E. and Margie Becker; he had three sisters--Elvera Mae, Mary Jane, and Dora Nadine.


Edgar Dewey was a Private in Company C, 1st Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Marine Division, the group which raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi. Edgar Dewey was killed in the morning of the initial assault on Iwo Jima, February 19th, 1945. He was originally buried in the 5th Marine Division Cemetery on the island but was re-interred in the Louisburg cemetery November 1, 1948.


Birth records indicate his name was Elmer Dewey Becker. For unknown reasons, he or his parents chose to use the name Edgar Dewey Becker instead.


His grave is located between his parents and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Houston Smith, in the northernmost end of the center section.
