She attended various one-room schoolhouses in the Louisburg Community and graduated at the age of 17 years and one month from Louisburg Rural High School, class of 1940.
Mary Jane attended Pittsburg State College and obtained her teacher's certification. She then taught in one-room schoolhouses in the Louisburg area.
She married Howard L. Purvis on August 22, 1942. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on September 11, 1942 and she would not see him again until he arrived home from the war in October, 1945. They made their home in Louisburg and had three children: Joyce, Doris and Charles.
Mary Jane served as County Treasurer for Miami County, Kansas. She also served on the City Council and as the City Clerk of Louisburg, Kansas.
