He married Betsy Parks on October 24, 1836 in Acworth, New Hampshire. Shortly after their marriage the couple settled in Addison County, Vermont where Mr. Houston engaged in the lumbering business in Starksboro and the vicinity. A list of county land deeds shows at least eight entries dating from 1835 to 1844 in which Alexander was involved. In some of these his only brother, Isaac was also a party. One of the entries included a saw mill, dam and water-rights beside the land. While in Vermont Alexander had served as a surveyor roads, clerk of a school district and Justice of the Peace.
With his wife, Betsy and three children; Adaline, Watson and Daniel, Alexander migrated in 1853 to Wisconsin. In 1855 he was living in Menasha, Winnebago County, Wisconsin. In 1861 they moved to Blue Earth County, Minnesota, but had to flee eastward from there in 1862 because of the great Sioux uprising. They went to Dodge County, Minnesota and established in Mantorville township on a farm where they spent the remainder of their lives, he was a prosperous farmer.
Alexander died in Mantorville township, Dodge County, Minnesota on February 24, 1889. He was buried in the family plot in the Maple Grove Cemetery, in Kasson, Minnesota.
