Death Takes Janitor of Courthouse
A former Valparaiso grocer and a custodian at the Porter county courthouse for the past three years is dead.
He was Michael Thomas Gast, 73, 355 Chicago, who died at 8:10 p.m., Thursday in Porter Memorial hospital after a lingering illness.
Gast was born in Valparaiso Oct. 27, 1882, the son of the late Andrew and Frances (Bentley) Gast. On Nov. 9, 1909, at St. Paul's Catholic church, he married Anna Karl of Moberly, Mo.
In 1909, Gast and his brother, Louis, opened a grocery store at 58 Lincolnway. After several years, this partnership was dissolved and Gast worked for Lowenstines' Department store and the old Specht-Finney company.
Opens Own Store
He later opened his own grocery store at the corner of Napoleon and Lincolnway. He retired from the grocery business three years ago and since that time had been a custodian at the courthouse.
Gast was an honorary member of the Valparaiso Knights of Columbus, Lodge 738. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Paul's Catholic church.
Surviving besides the widow are one son, Harold; two brothers, Andrew and Frank; one sister, Mrs. Rose Hodsden, all of Valparaiso. He is also survived by nine nephews and nieces.
Gast was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Louis, and one sister, Mrs. Delia Negosinski.
Solemn requiem mass, following short prayer services at the Dykes Funeral home, will be held at 9 a.m., Monday at St. Paul's Catholic church.
The Rev. Raymond Derrick will officiate and burial will be in St. Paul's Catholic cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m., Sunday.
Friends may call at the Dykes Funeral home after 7 p.m., Saturday until time of services.
