Louise Latimer of Elk City, a retired teacher, died Wednesday in the Community Hospital, Elk City, OK at the age of 97.
She was born on a farm near Mayetta, Jackson County, KS, the daughter of James Kirk and Sarah (McLin)(Ebright) Latimer. In 1896 she moved with her parents to Indian Territory, where they settled on a farm near Corbett in what now is Cleveland County, OK.
Upon completion of common school she began to teach in a country school near Corbett. In 1906 her family moved to a farm north of Foss in Custer County where she taught at Oak Glade and Keeler schools.
In 1909 they moved to the Burns Flat Community in Washita County. She taught many years at North Burns, Novice, Breathwaite, Hagar, Weiss and Foss. She obtained her high school diploma from Foss High School and went on to attend Southwestern State Teachers College at Weatherford, OK.
In 1920 she and her parents and brother, Tom, moved to a farm four miles south of Foss, in Washita County, which became known as Latimer Corner. After the deaths of her parents, she continued on the farm until she moved to Elk City, Beckham County, in 1952.
She is survived by twelve nieces and nephews: Miss Neva Latimer and Mrs. Edith Ferguson, of Tatum, TX; Mrs. Ruby Rose and Mrs. Bonnie Shobert, of Lexington, Mrs. Aline Blumhof, of Okla. City and Mrs. Vautress Nicholson, of Missouri; and Mrs. Wenona Dunn and Mrs. Laurel McNatt, of Foss; Loyd Latimer, of Elk City, Carl Latimer, of Woodward, OK, Lawrence Latimer, of Lexington, OK, and R. C. Latimer, of Washington, OK.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, three brothers, one half-sister and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, Dec. 28th, in Martin Funeral Home of Elk City and interment was at Page Cemetery south of Foss
