ELKHART -- Ferman H. Basse, 70, of Oregon Avenue, died Sunday (Feb. 22, 2004) at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born Oct. 29, 1933, in Auburn to Oscar and Violet (Pletcher) Basse, now both deceased. He married Peggy Miller on May 30, 1952, in Elkhart. She survives with two sons, Steve and Terry (Susan) Basse, both of Elkhart; four daughters, Mrs. Paul (Jolinda) Wood, Julie Hoss, Debra Shively and Mrs. Dallas (Peggy) Robbins, all of Elkhart; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Marvin (Jocelyn) Basse of Auburn. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola, with a 7 p.m. Masonic service to be conducted by Tyrian Lodge 718. The 11 a.m. Thursday service will be at Calvary United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Clyde Trumbauer. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Mr. Basse served in the National Guard. He was a first-class chemical operator for Miles Laboratories for 40 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of Tyrian Masonic Lodge 718, where he served as the Chaplain and Ambassador to the Masonic Home of Indiana, South Bend Valley of the Scottish Rite and Calvary United Methodist Church. He was a magician, loved to fish and sang with a barbershop quartet called "The Cavaliers" for several years. He also played and collected harmonicas. Memorials may be given to Indiana Masonic Home Foundation.
