He was still a small boy when the family acquired land on Mt. Diablo and it was his duty to locate stray cattle. When darkness overtook him, he would build a fire at the top of the mountain to signal to his parents that he was safe.
He was also a driver of a stage from Rogue River Valley, Oregon, to the Indian Reservation. He was able to converse in the Indian language.
Joe was an employee of the county for more than 20 years.Also was an undertaker and deputy coroner with the late Henry Curry, a post he held for 17 years. For the same length of time he was also a foreman of the Port Costa Water Company.
He and Maud divorced in Aug 1928.
