OBITUARY Iron River Reporter March 31 1952 "Albin Johnson, Homer Mechanic, Dies Yesterday"
Albin Russell Johnson, 59, of the Homer Location, died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Stambaugh General hospital.
A maintenance mechanic at the Homer mine and a veteran of 30 years service with the M.A. Hanna company, Mr. Johnson worked last Thursday although he did not feel well because of a cold. He remained at home for the rest of the week. His condition became serious and he was taken to the hospital yesterday morning. His death, due to a heart condition, was unexpected.
He was born in Crystal Falls on Oct. 29, 1893 and attended Crystal Falls schools. In June 1921, he married Miss Frances Burke of Florence. They resided in Crystal Falls for seven years, then moved to Bates township where they lived for 23 years, and about seven years ago, moved to the home in the Homer location of Mineral Hills.
Mr. Johnson's picture as a 30-year veteran appeared in this month's issue of the Hanna Miner magazine. His service anniversary was in January. He served with the U.S. Army in France during World War I.
He leaves his wife, Frances; a son James of Iron River; two daughters, Mrs. Ted (Cleo) Contardi of Iron River and Mrs. Tony (Lorraine) Guzowski of Algoma, Iowa; and four granddaughters. A son William was killed in Germany March 24, 1945 while serving with American forces during World War II.
Mr. Johnson also leaves two brothers, Charles Johnson, Crystal Falls, and Peter Johnson of Waukegan, and three sisters, Mrs. Alma Westcott and Mrs. George Thomas of Iron River, and Mrs. Augusta Peterson of Crystal Falls.
The body is in state at the Johns chapel. Funeral arrangements were to be completed today.

Albin, known as (Shorty) Johnson, and his wife, Frances, came from Crystal Falls in 1927, to make their home in the Bates Mine Location.
Shorty was a maintenance man for the M.A. Hanna Co. and worked at the Bates Mine.
They had two sons: William, who was killed in World War II, and Jim, who is now residing in Bellafonte, Pennsylvania; and two daughters, Lorraine Guzowski and Cleo Contardi, both living in Iron River.
Shorty and Frances witnessed all four children graduating from the 10th grade at the Rogers School.
Shorty was transferred to the Homer-Wauseca Mine in 1947; thus, they then moved to the Homer Location.
Shorty passed away March 30, 1952 and Frances on June 26, 1969.

Pfc. Wm. R. Johnson was killed in action on March 24, 1945, on his 23rd birthday, in Germany, while participating in the airborne operation of enlarging the Rhine River bridgehead.
Johnson, who was attached to the 17th Airborne Division, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albin (Shorty) R. Johnson of Bates Mine Location.
Pfc. Johnson was killed at Wesel, Germany, and was buried in Margraten, Holland, a simple cross with his name and serial number marking his grave site. "He was well liked by the men and everyone respected him for the good soldier he was," wrote his commanding officer, Col. Kenneth L. Booth.
Wm. Johnson entered the service in October of 1942 and went overseas in August of 1944.

Albin R. Johnson, maintenance mechanic at the Homer mine, died at the Stambaugh General hospital March 30 after a short illness. Albin had been employed since 1922. Our sincere sympathy is extended to his wife and family.

NEWS ARTICLE Diamond Drill June 25, 1921 "Johnson-Burke"
Albin Russel Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Reynolds, of Crystal Falls, and Miss Mary Frances Burke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Burke, of Florence, were united in marriage Thursday morning at ten o'clock at the Florence Catholic Church parsonage. Rev. Father De Delver officiated. Miss Leona Lefebvre acting as bridesmaid, and William Burke brother of the bride, acting as best man. The bride was attired in a blue beaded crepe de chene, and the bridesmaid dressed in a pink organdie. After the wedding ceremony was performed the wedding party drove to Crystal Falls, to the home of the groom, where a six course supper was served. The bride is a popular young lady of Florence, making her home here for the past fifteen years. The groom is a popular young man of Crystal Falls, being born and raised there and has many friends. He is also an ex-service man, having served nine months in the army, three of which were in France. The young couple are well known in Florence and in Crystal Falls, having many friends who extend congratulations for a long and happy married life.
