W. Lynn Velde, 79, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Peoria, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, en route to Florida South Hospital in Orlando, Fla.

Born July 10, 1921, in Pekin to Harvey L. Velde and Florence Schmitt, he married Marilyn Wheeler. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey and Gary, both of Vero Beach; three daughters, Kimberly Lambert of Birmingham, Ala., Jennifer Velde of Orlando, Fla., and Kimberly Monroy of Delray Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Carol Meythaler of Owensboro, Ky., and Louise Clendenin of Monmouth; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Ford dealer for 50 years, he became the youngest Ford dealer in the country at age 23. He also was a dealer of Cadillac, Lincoln-Mercury and Oldsmobile cars in Pekin.

He was a partner in a franchise of Kentucky Fried Chicken stores in the Midwest and in Arizona. He also had been a private pilot transporting children to the Children's Hospital in Chicago for treatment.

He attended Bradley University in Peoria.

He was a founding member and of the Golden Eagles and Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach.

He was a founding member and first president of the Bent Pine Golf Club in Vero Beach. He served as mayor of Orchid Island, Fla., for two consecutive terms.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Vero Beach, where friends may call 1 1/2 hours before. Burial will be in Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach. Strunk Funeral Home in Vero Beach is in charge of arrangements.
