Dollie is the daughter of Wilson Burchfield and Elizabeth "Bettie" Baker Burchfield, and granddaughter of Nathaniel Burchfield & Anna McKinney Burchfield, and John C. Baker & Nancy Estes Baker. Wilson Burchfield was born in Carter Co., TN and Elizabeth Baker Burchfield was born in Yancy Co., NC. Dollie said her father died in 1892 and mother in 1893, but Dollie's sister Nancy said their father died about 1883 and mother died about 1886.

Dollie was born in Carter Co., TN per her Aug 1907 Cherokee application #39303. Dollie C. Burris' Widow's Indigent Pension #6092 of Sep 1915 indicated she born in Mitchell County near Iron Mountain. However, that should be in Carter County, near Iron Mountain in Harrell Township, Mitchell Co., NC. For her Cherokee application, Dollie didn't know her age, but thought about 50 (James said she was 59). She was age 5 (est. born 1845) per the Nov 1850 Carter Co., TN Census (sister Nancy was age 6). She was born 1848 per the 1860 to1880 Censuses, and born May 1850 per the 1900 Census (ages further off as time passes).

Dollie married Charles Nathan Hughes (69611367) in 1866 per Charles' memorial. Their children included (order of birth): Hale Hughes, Ezekiel Hughes, Nathaniel Hughes, Julia E. Hughes, John H. Hughes, and William T. Hughes. In the 1870 Census, Dollie and Charles were living in Polk Co., TN. Charles was not in the 1880 Census with Dollie who was living in Blount Co., TN, next to her parents. The 1880 census shows Dollie as married; Charles' memorial implies he left Dollie about 1879. Charles' death certificate indicated he had been a resident of Montana for 20 years (thus there in 1887).

On 2 Apr 1890, Dollie filed pension application 418.629 as a remarried widow of a Union soldier, apparently thinking Charles had passed away. She filed from Tennessee as Dolly C. Burris. It seems she refiled 418.629 on 5 May 1917. Dollie (as widow of confederate veteran, James Burris), along with several other disabled or indigent widows who had married the veterans after 1879, were dopped from the TN pension rolls in 1917. Those widows, and widows who married before 1890, were eligible for restoration in 1919. Incorrectly dropped in 1917, Dollie's pension #6092 (widow of James Burris) was to be restored in Mar 1919.

Dollie married James M. Burris on 4 Sep 1887 in Blount Co., TN (Caroline Huse in the marriage record). They married at Cade's Cove per Dollie C. Burris' pension #6092. Per the 26 Apr 1910 Census, this was the second marriage for James and Dollie (7 of Dollie's 8 children living per the census (1900 Census showed 6 of 7 children living).

Dollie filed for her pension #6092 (application 12.836) in Sep 1915 while living in Tellico Plains, TN. The pension was as the widow of James M. Burris. In the 1920 Census, Dollie was living in Tellico Plains on Scott Hill (with granddaughter Lettie Hughes). Per her pension papers, Dollie passed away 6 May 1920. It is believed that Dollie had been under the care of her son, Hale Hughes (232279894), and most likely interred in Tellico Plains City Cemetery (as was Hale in 1927).

Notes:

Dollie's sister Nancy Burchfield Hughes was born 15 Nov 1845 per her Cherokee application #37428, but appears it may be 1843 per the 1850 to 1880 Censuses (Nancy married Josiah Hughes). She was born Oct 1848 per the 1900 Census.

Nathaniel Birchfield, brother of Dollie, was born 8 Oct 1836 in Carter Co., TN per his Cherokee application #35629 (living Polk Co., TN). He indicated that his maternal grandmother's maiden name was Estridge.

Dollie and Charles' son, William Thomas Hughes passed away 16 Mar 1934 in Jacksonville, Florida. His death certificate shows born Nov 1884 (s/b abt. 1879) in Blount Co., TN. His wife was Florence Dena Hughes (37307104). His parents were shown as Charles E. Hughes and Dolla Birksfield (a little off).  The informant was his son Clifford Hughes [Penland Clifford Hughes], of Jacksonville Beach. Burial was in Jacksonville Beach FL. They must have recently moved to Florida (were on Coker Creek Rd in Monroe County, TN, District 4 in 10 Apr 1930 Census). In the 30 Apr 1940 Census, Dena Hughes (widowed) is in Duval Co., FL, living next to her son Blending Dewitt Hughes.

The 18 Jun 1900 Census for James and Dollie has with them Thomas Hughes, age 16 (born June 1883), who is listed as James' step son. Per the 22 Jun 1880 Census, Charles and Dollie's son William T. Hughes as age 1 (born about 1879). He married Dena Boring 22 Sep 1906 and the 1910 – 1930 Censuses show him born 1879 to 1889. The 12 Sep 1918 WW1 draft registration for William Thomas Hughes shows him age 38, so born about 1880 (Dena Hughes is his contact). For date of birth, it had "Don't Know."

Charles Nathan Hughes was born Apr 1834 per the 1900 Census, but was age 19 in the 13 Nov 1850 Polk Co., TN Census and age 40 in the 16 Jul 1870 Census. Per his service record (34th Reg't KY Inf), he as age 27 when he joined 5 Sep 1863. The record showing mustered out 24 Jun 1865 at Knoxville has him age 37. Charles passed away 2 Aug 1907 in Big Spring Township, Fergus Co., Montana. His death certificate shows he was age 80, was married, was a rancher, and had been a resident of Montana for 20 years. The informant didn't know who Charles' parents were.
