Charles served in Co. B, 34th KY Infantry, the Union Army during the War Between the States and after returning home married Dollie Burchfield. She stated in her pension application that they married the 21st of April 1866. They were parents of James Nathan, Ezekiel, Samuel, Nathaniel, Julia E., John Harvey and William Thomas.
The last child was born 1879, so it is assumed that Charles left Tennessee about that time, and ended up in Montana. Dollie didn't know where he was, and assuming he was deceased filed for a pension on his war service, only to find that he was still living and had a 2nd family there.
Charles and Mary appear in the 1900 census, says they've been married 30 years, (not jiving with him still being in Tennessee in 1879.)
A sad event occurred in this family when the 2nd wife of James Nathan Hughes (oldest son of Charles and Dollie) perished in a house fire along with six of her children. (See Findagrave memorial # 35475060)
