James Henry Avant and his wife Etta welcomed family, friends and travelers for meals and overnight lodging in thier home in Deepstep, Georgia. It was not uncommon to have 20 people at the dinner table. Etta's pound cakes were a favorite of all. James Henry was a man of many talents, being a blacksmith, carpenter, bricklayer, mechanic, farmer, and general store owner. While providing an income for his family he also trained his sons in occupations they would follow in life.

Early in 1900 James H Avant built and operated a store in a building next to his home, and later built a top story to house the Woodman of the World Lodge. When "Mr. Jim" went out of business and the Lodge no longer met, it was renovated into a home for Mr. Jim's Daughter, Viola Avant Norris and her husband Hubie Norris.
J.H. Avant served as Mayor of Deepstep in 1924.
