Mrs. Harriet C. Douglass
Died – February 18, 1897, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. CHAMPION, at Belvidere, Ill., Mrs. Harriet C. Douglass, wife of Edmund DOUGLASS, of Postville, Iowa, aged 77 years.
Mrs. Douglass’ maiden name was Harriet CURTIS. She was born in Washington county, Ohio, Sept. 1s, 1819. Her parents were from Vermont. Her early life was spent in Ohio, where she attended the common schools. In 1835 she moved to Illinois with a brother, her parents having died when she was about ten years of age. She married Mr. Edmund DOUGLASS, July 23rd 1829. In 1846 they moved to Iowa, settling first at Garnavillo. Later they resided for several years a Clayton, and in 1859 they moved to McGregor, where they have made their home and retained their homestead till the time of her death, though for several years, as age and its attendant infirmities crept on, they have lived mostly with their children
They have traveled life’s pathway together for over half a century, sharing its joys and sorrows, its cares and its burdens. To them were born nine children, seven of whom are living. In early life Mrs. Douglas united with the Baptist church at Otterville, Ill. On her removal to McGregor she united with the Congregational church there, and was a member at the time of her death. She has always lived a consistent christian life.
Mrs. Douglass a woman of more than ordinary intellectual powers. She was a great reader, an interesting conversationalist. She had great command of language and expressed her ideas with clearness and intelligence. With all the cares of a large family, and the duties of life, she always managed to find some time to read and improve her mind. She kept up her interest in the current thought and literature of the day on scientific, literary, political and religious subjects.
Her remains were brought to McGregor for internment Feb 20th. Short services at the cemetery were conducted by Rev. C. A. Marshall.
