ALBERT R. BARNES SR., TORCH LAKE RESIDENT FOR 55 YEARS, PASSES

Funeral services for Albert R. Barnes, Sr. who passed away at his late home in Torch Lake township at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 14, 1937, were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, at the Kewadin church, Rev. E. T. Smith, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Burial was made in the family lot in Maple Grove cemetery in Elk Rapids.
Albert Roswell Barnes was born in Fayette county, Iowa, January 1, 1861, and grew to manhood in that state. At the age of 21 he came to Michigan, locating in Milton township.
The next year, September 1, 1883, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Warner. Seven children were born to bless this union, and the passing of the husband and father was the first break in the family.
Four years ago last month, Mr. and Mrs. Barnes celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary, and they have spent their entire married life in or near this immediate vicinity.
They located on the 90-acre farm, that was his late home, about 45 years ago, converting it from a timberland to a productive farm and pleasant home. About 40 years ago they rented the farm for six years, during which time they lived in Torch Lake village where Mr. Barnes owned and operated a meat market,
He has held several positions of responsibility, including the offices of highway commissioner and justice of the peace, for several years and was a member of the board of education in District No. 4 for over 20 years.
He was the last member of a family of eight children, and his age was 76 years, 9 months.
The large number attending the funeral and the abundance of beautiful flowers bespoke the esteem in which he was held.
Left to mourn his departure, besides his devoted widow are his three daughters, Mrs. Cora Farrow of Onaway, Mrs. Mae Rosenberg and Mrs. Lila Hockin of Kewadin; and four sons, Robert J. of Bellingham, Washington, Earl E. of Onaway, Vernon L. and Albert R. Jr. of Kewadin; 10 grandchildren, several nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
Among those from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Dan Farrow and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Barnes of Onaway, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Adrian of Rogers City, Miss Erma Barnes of Detroit, Mrs. Mary Warner Case, Frank Brock and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Randall of Traverse City; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hull of Ann Arbor, Mrs. Elizabeth McDougal, Mrs. Madge Culman and Mrs. Darline Gobic of Grand Rapids; Judge Wm. C. Severance and Robert Craven of Bellaire and Ronald Schuler of Elmira.
