Oscar J. Byron, 80, of Edinburg, ND passed away Friday, April 10, 2020, at home surrounded by family.

Oscar J. Byron was born December 1, 1939, near Hallson, ND, to Sigurdur and Helga (Hannesson) Byron. He grew up and attended school in the Hallson area and graduated from high school in Mountain, ND in 1958. He attended and graduated from Mayville State College. In June 1960 he married his sweetheart, Shirley Gudmundson, in Mountain, ND. He taught for 50 years and co-owned Byron & Hammer Construction employing his children and some of his students. Upon retirement he drove for Walsh County Public Transportation.

He was a member of the Pembina Hills Lutheran Church. He loved cooking and baking, especially his secret chocolate cake. He also enjoyed coaching, fishing, attending concerts and occasionally gambling. His family was his passion and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchild attending their many activities.

Oscar is survived by his wife Shirley; children: Sherri Hurt of Hoople, ND; Kim (Jon) Ness of Devils Lake, ND; Kristi (Tom) Holm of Hoople, ND; John Byron (Terri Nelson) of Fargo, ND; Kirk (Beth) Byron of Palmer, AK. He was Afi to: Michael Seim, Shelby Ness, Jordan Seim, MacKenzie Ness, Zachary Hurt, Lucas Byron, Morgan Seim, Andrew Hurt, Katelynn Byron, and Austin Byron; and step grandchildren, Tyson (Kenzie) Holm and Jacob Holm; great granddaughter, Hayden Gehrtz; his sister, Marie Simundson; sister-in-law, Catherine Byron; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Eric Hurt; great grandson, Oscar Seim; siblings: Ben Byron, Alfred Byron, Louis Byron, Sam Byron, Kristine Hannesson, Ella Moore, Steinun Berg, Gunna Johnson, Helga Halldorson, and Marlene Johnson; and brother-in-law, Todd Gudmundson.
