We do not know where John Ray was in the 1900 and 1910 census. He is not found with his mother Mary Jane in 1900 when she was still single and living with her parents. Nor is he is the 1910 census, when she is married to Quincy Shaffer.

John left home at age 15 to work in the Johnstown Steel Mills. He married Cleo M. Fisher on 17 Apr 1919. They had four children all born and raised in Schellsburg: Pauline born Aug 1919, Clarence C. (Sonny) born Feb 1922, Glenn E. born abt 1927 and John Robert "Bob" born Mar 1932. John and Cleo lived their entire lives in Schellsburg.
