Berlyn Eugene "Gene" Cornelius, 82, of EBT Station Road, Saltillo, went to be with his Lord March 19, 2020. At the time of his death, he was residing with his daughter in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Born Jan. 10, 1938, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Millard Cornelius and Garnetta Park. Sept. 27, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy J. Greenland, to whom he was married for 62 years.

Surviving are his wife Nancy, daughter Kimberly and her husband, Mark Kimmel, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, son Tracy and his wife, Karla Madden Cornelius, of Orbisonia, son Todd Cornelius of Saltillo and son Travis Cornelius of Orbisonia. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Jonathan Kimmel and wife, Megan, Maria Kimmel Little and husband, Jonathan, Elisabeth Kimmel Dorosh and husband, Nazari, Olivia Kimmel Meersman and husband, James, Joshua Kimmel, Brennan Cornelius and wife, Brittany, Tyler Cornelius, Dane Cornelius and wife, Emily, Karis Cornelius, Alexandra Cornelius and Christian Cornelius; and six great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother, Kayedon O'Neal and wife, Cleo, of Broad Top City, as well as beloved brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Allen "Bud" Cornelius, formerly of Saltillo.

As a member of Calvary Independent Baptist Church of Saltillo, Mr. Cornelius was actively involved and served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. He also enjoyed serving in prison ministry for 14 years, and traveled throughout the area as lay speaker at many local churches.

Actively involved in his community, he served on the Saltillo Borough Council for over 20 years. He was a board member of the Huntingdon County Hall of Fame, which he enjoyed immensely. He also served on the board of Child Evangelism Fellowship and Huntingdon County PRIDE.

A lifelong resident of Saltillo, he graduated from Saltillo High School in 1955 and was a 1963 graduate of Shippensburg University with a Bachelor of Science in history and later became certified in special education.

Mr. Cornelius taught special education and history at Southern Huntingdon High School for 37 years, during which he also coached baseball, football and basketball. He was a PIAA sports official, umpiring softball for nearly a decade and officiating basketball for 44 years. He also served as athletic director at Southern Huntingdon County High School for 28 years. For 25 years, he managed the Three Springs Community pool. He was a standout three-sport athlete at Saltillo High School where he played football, basketball and baseball. He played third base his senior year at Shippensburg State College and continued to play the game until he was 37 years old.

Mr. Cornelius was selected as "Man of the Year" in 1976 by Southern Huntingdon Jaycees and in 1995 received the prestigious "Good Scout Award" from the Oneida District of the Juniata Valley Council of Boy Scouts of America. In 2000, he was inducted into the third class of the Huntingdon County Sports Hall of Fame. The Salvation Army honored Gene with their "Man of the Year Award" in 2017.

He was an avid traveler who loved the beauty of God's creation and enjoyed many sightseeing vacations with family and extended family. He especially enjoyed traveling to the western U.S., but he always looked forward to coming home to his beloved Saltillo. Mr. Cornelius loved the game of baseball and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He will be fondly remembered by many as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, coach and friend. He most cherished relationships that were cultivated through the different organizations with which he was associated.

Due to current conditions throughout the country, a memorial service will be held at a later date. This will be publicized and held within the next few months.
