Dexter A. Leggett, prominent citizen of Gouverneur, who for more than forty years has been closely identified with the insurance and real estate business in this section, died at his home No. 21 Rowley street, at 7:30 o'clock Monday morning following a severe stroke of apoplexy which he suffered February sixteenth. He had been in poor health for over a year previous to this attack. His passing will be mourned throughout St. Lawrence county by scores of close friends who had come to know him through business and fraternal channels as a man of worth and absolute integrity. His name was known and honored not only by his own home folks but by men of prominence in many sections of the county.

Mr. Leggett was a man of unusual principles and high attainments, possessing rare ability and always taking an active interest in the welfare of the community in which he lived. He was a faithful church attendant and for many years had taken a prominent and active part in the affairs of the Masonic fraternity, in Gouverneur lodge 217 F & A M and in Gouverneur Chapter No 233 R.A.M.

Mr. Leggett was born in the town of Fowler, December 20, 1847, locating in this village when a young man. He was the fifth son of Apollos and Eunice Parsons Leggett, both natives of Massachusetts. He was educated in the old Wesleyan seminary. September 1, 1879, Mr. Leggett was united in marriage to Lilla D. Howe of Southern Vermont.

After having been associated in the fire and life insurance business and real estate here for more than forty years, he sold his business interests to Wallace Sreeter April 1st, 1920. During his active business career, he also found time for village and town affairs, serving both Fowler and Gouverneur in various town offices with fidelity and ability. From 1892 to 1903 he was secretary of the Gouverneur Agricultural and Mechanical society, a position which he filled with credit and distinction. He held the office of Deputy Sheriff for 8 years, was village trustee or a two year term and for several years was the efficient chief of the Gouverneur Fire Department, also active as secretary for the department for 28 years.

Surviving are a daughter, Marion H. .a local registered nurse, and one son, Prof. Harold A. D. Leggett, professor in the University of Vermont at Burlington, Vt. A son, Halstead Howe Leggett died May 6th 1898 at the age of 18 years, besides his widow.

The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon, February 23, at three o'clock from the late home and will be in charge of Gouverneur lodge, 217 F & A. M.
