Harvey P. Legate, one of Gouverneur's well known and familiar figures was found dead in bed at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Pearl Turnbull at 6 this morning. He retired at 9:30 last night in his usual good health. Heart trouble is given as the cause of his sudden dissolution.

Mr. Legate was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in July, 1863 in Company H, 20th New York Cavalry and served until the close of the war. He was married January 31, 1866 to Cornelia Cross. They moved to this village from Fowler in 1891, where they had resided since. He was highly esteemed in this village and his death will be sincerely mourned by many.

Mr. Legate was born in the town of Fowler, May 20, 1844, and was the son of Apolos and Unice Parsons Legate, who were natives of Massachusetts. Mr. Legate conducted a farm in Fowler for many years before coming to Gouverneur to reside and he was one of that town's most successful tillers of the soil.

Mr. Legate was greatly devoted to his home and friends and was always willing to give aid to the sick and deserving. He was of a cheerful and social disposition. He made friends and kept them. He was a fine old gentleman, whose word was as good as a government bond. He was a member of Barnes Post, G. A. R., Gouverneur grange and the Baptist church.

Mr. Legate was always a hail fellow, well met and always had a pleasant and kindly word for all. He will be greatly missed by many outside of his only family family circle.

Mr. Legate is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Turnbull and Mrs. Clayton Rush.

The funeral will be held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Turnbull at 2:30 Friday afternoon, Rev. J. Wilbor Richardson, his pastor, officiating, and burial will be made in Riverside Cemetery.
