Born June 3, 1919 in Cory, Ind., he was the son of Rutherford and Anna Catherine (Roeschlein) Bernhardt.
He was principal for Mill Creek school from 1963 until retiring in 1984. Prior to that, he was principal at Coal City Schools, 1959-63. He was a social studies teacher and coach at Cory from 1948-59.
He was an Indiana State University graduate with bachelor's and master's degrees in education and an EDS degree.
He was a member of Belleville United Methodist church (where he was adult Sunday school teacher and president of the Administrative Board).
He was also a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, National Social Studies Association, Hendricks County Principals Association, Phi Delta Kappa fraternity and a former member of the Pimento Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Lolita (Killion) Bernhardt; a son, Bruce Bernhardt, Coatesville; two daughters, Arlene Roach, Gilbertsville, Ky., and Beverly Wilkins, Indianapolis; a sister, Ruth McCullough, Center Point; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Belleville United Methodist Church. Pastor Ron Haun will officiate. Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.
Visitation is set for 4-8 p.m. Monday at Weaver and Randolph Funeral Home, Clayton.
