Merritt Busey, a son of Mathew Wilkinson and Malinda Cook Busey, was born about 1840 in Champaign County, Illinois, where his father began purchasing government land in 1831.

Merritt Busey and Miss Emma Stateler were married on 9 October 1861 in Champaign County. (His brother Granville had married her sister Amanda in 1857.)

Merritt Busey enlisted as a private for 3 years on 1 August 1862, and was mustered in Company B, 76th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry on 22 August. According to his enlistment papers, he was age 23, married, a farmer born and resident in Urbana, Champaign County. He was 5 feet, 11 inches tall; had brown hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion.

The 76th Illinois participated in numerous campaigns and actions, including the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi (18 May to 4 July 1863). Private Busey was discharged for disability on 24 May 1865 at Mobile, Alabama, then occupied by his regiment.

Merritt Busey's veterans' headstone card is the only known record showing his date of death: 17 July 1868. Emma, the widow of "Bucey, Merit" of "B 76 Ill. Inf.," filed for a pension on 3 April 1872. She did not remarry, and died in 1919.
