When William was 3 years old, his father, Col. Gilbert Christian (DAR Ancestor #: A021736 ), moved with his family to Sullivan County, Tennessee. They were the first settlement there, living on their Walnut Hill Plantation beside the Holston River, and the area began being called Christianville. The settlement grew and in 1802 became known as Kingsport, TN. A historical marker is placed there for Col. Gilbert Christian.

William married Margaret Elizabeth "Betsy" Anderson, and they spent their lives together in Bledsoe County and Haywood County, Tennessee.

In his will probated March 30, 1838, Williams's listed 9 legatees were the following:
1 Harriett Bratton Christian Stanley, his daughter
2 James Harvey Christian, his son
3 John Anderson Christian, his son
4 John Ward Watson, his daughter Joanna Wesley Christian's husband,
5 John Scott, his daughter's husband,
6 Mrs. Elizabeth Christian
7 Isabelle Patton Christian Anderson, his daughter,
8 Anderson Skillern, his daughter Margaret McDowell Christian's husband,
9 Gilbert Israel Christian, his son.

After William passed, his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy", was living in Madison County, Tennessee (1870 census) with their daughter, Isabella Patton Christian Anderson, son-in-law Robert Henry Anderson, grandson John Christian Anderson, and their son Gilbert Israel Christian.

15 generations of this Christian lineage were Deemsters on the Isle of Man, lastly being William "Illiam Dhone" Christian and also have ancestors from the Christian Royal Family of Denmark.
