Sister Catherine (Jane Patrice) Ahern, OP (1930-2023)
Sister Catherine Ahern, formerly known by her religious name Sister Jane Patrice, died on Friday, June 2, 2023, at her home in LaGrange, Illinois. She was 93 years of age and in the 71st year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister Catherine was born in Chicago to Patrick Joseph and Jane Eileen (Condon) Ahern. She graduated from Mercy High School in Chicago and received a bachelor's degree in home economics from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a master's degree in home economics from Michigan State University in East Lansing.
Sister Catherine spent 22 years ministering in education in Homewood, St. Charles, and Wilmette, Illinois; Detroit, Dearborn, and Lansing, Michigan; and Santa Cruz, California. She was a teacher and counselor at the Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago for 29 years.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Reverend John Ahern, Patrick Ahern, and Gerald Ahern. She is survived by a brother, Eugene, of Rolling Meadows, Illinois; a sister, Jane Cantieri, of Mount Prospect, Illinois; other loving family members; and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.
Visitation will be held from 6:30-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in the gathering space of St. Catherine Chapel. The Vigil Prayer will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 15, 2023. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Congregation Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian.
