OBITUARY: Daily Commonwealth Fond du Lac, WI Dec. 11, 1918. "AGED PIONEER IS CALLED BY DEATH. Mrs. John Berg, pioneer of the town of Ashford, survived by seven children, thirty-four grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren, passed away Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Berg's maiden name was Maggie Schmidt.
She was born May 13, 1839 at Mietzel, Prussia and was therefore 89 years old at the time of her demise. She came to this country in 1854 locating in the town of Ashford, where she resided almost continuously save for a short time when she made her home with Mrs. Matt Weber at Merton. Her marriage to Mr. Berg took place Jun 3, 1855, at St. Martin's church, Ashford. The eleven surviving children are: Mrs. P. Wietor, South Eden; Mrs. J. Wietor, Merrill; Mrs. J. Weber, Merton; Mrs. J. Brandt, Pewaukee; Miss Lena Ashford; Martin, Edgar and Will, Ashford and a stepson, John Berg, Appleton."
