Jeff Davis Martin

Chief Master Sergeant Jeff Davis Martin passed away at his home on May 5, 2023. Jeff was born to his parents Joseph and Grace Martin on December 11, 1927. Jeff grew up in Galena, Kansas. He was the youngest of six children. Jeff was raised alone by his mother from six years of age. In Galena High School he worked at two different grocery stores before and after school to help his mother. He also played on the Varsity Basketball team. He played in the summer Baseball League.

After graduating from High School in 1945, the draft was still on in the country after WWII ended in 1945. When Jeff turned 18 on December 11, 1945, he drafted with his good friend, Dick Smith. Jeff went into the Army Air Corp (to become the Air Force). Jeff went to Japan after training and served there. In 1948, he was released from his duty.

Jeff went to Los Angeles and lived with his sister and her family. He worked for his brother-in-law at his dental lab. In 1950, Jeff was recalled to duty due to the Korean War. He was sent to Castle Air Base in Merced, Ca. While serving there, he met and married Judith Lundquist from Atwater, Ca. While at Castle, their first son, Gray was born.

Jeff and his family were then sent to a base in England. While in England, Jeff's two other sons, Paul and Chris were born. After England, Jeff and family went to March Air Base in Southern California. From there, Jeff was sent to Omaha, Nebraska to the Strategic Air Command (SAC). He was in Logistics and stayed with SAC for the rest of his 29 year career in the Air Force. He served at a base in Guam where the B52 bombers took off for Vietnam. After Guam, he returned to SAC headquarters in Omaha. Jeff retired from the Air Force in Utah in 1975.

After retirement, Jeff attended Weber State University majoring in Logistics. He also over the years worked at two car dealerships. During this time, Jeff and his wife divorced. Jeff was active in the Wildcats Bench for the Men and Women's sports teams at Weber State. He was a Mason. He also Marshaled for professional senior golf tournaments each year in Park City, Utah.

In 1993, Jeff reunited with Rayma Mitchell Dines whom he'd known since Junior High School in Galena, Kansas. High School friends let them know about each other. Rayma lived in Merced, Ca. In 1996, they were married and have lived in Merced all these years.

Jeff was active in Merced being on the Blue Devil Bench for Merced College's football team and served as its president for a year. Jeff was active in the Air Force retired Chief Master Sergeant's Group. He was on the organizing board to bring a golf course to Merced. After it was built, he was the head of the volunteer Marshals for the course.

Eventually, the County gave the golf course land to build the University of California, Merced. Jeff worked for two years with Smith Auto Parts.

As Jeff's health and his wife's health began to fail, they moved into the Pacifica Senior Living until his death. Jeff was well-loved by all his family and friends!

Jeff is survived by his wife, Rayma, his sons Paul and wife Sally, Chris and Gray. His son Patrick died at birth. He is also survived by his nephew John Brinton Johnson and his wife Rosalie, and their four children- Melissa, Jeffrey, Andrew and Rebecca. Jeff leaves his step-daughter Cheryl, step-son James and his wife Nancy, his four step-grandsons J.R. and wife Myla, Nick, Jay and his wife Seonji, Lucas and wife Nicole and his six great- grandchildren: Kira, Zia, David, Johnny, Lina and Jimmy. Jeff has several nieces and nephews in Galena, Kansas area.

Burial will be at Santa Nella Military Cemetery at a later date.
