Gus Garrison was admitted to the Texas bar at Gilmer, 10 June 1873; the 1877 legal directory of Texas lists land and collections as his specialty in practice. In 1887, he was elected Sulphur Springs' City Attorney, and was Secretary of the Hopkins County Fair group; also practiced las at Musgrove Springs; he entered the ministry in 1895.

From 1886-91, he was Dist. Deputy Grandmaster of the 7th Dist. of the Grand Lodge of Texas, AF&AM, Sulphur Springs; 1892, he entered the Grand Lodge as Grand Junior Warden and, in 1895, became Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas, AF&AM. The Winnsboro Lodge, No. 1273, is known as the "Gus Garrison" Lodge.

Henry Augustus Garrison was the fifth child and eldest son born to Lovick Pierce Garrison and Nancy Cochran.

He married Sue Catherine Fore on May 15, 1873, and they had five children:

Sue Garrison died in 1900, and on March 19, 1902 Gus married Nannie McBride in Smith County, Texas; they had no children. Nannie died in 1909.

In 1917, Gus married Mabel Brisbin of Dayton, Texas; they had no children. Mabel preceded him in death on 24 April 1923, just a few months before his own death that same year.

Gus Garrison of Sulphur Springs, Deputy Grand Master was born in Altoona, Ga., in 1848. He entered the Confederate Army in 1832, when 15 years of age, under Stonewall Jackson, participated in all the engagements of the Army of Northern Virginia and surrendered with Lee at Appomattox. He came to Texas in October, admitted to the bar in 1873 at Gilmer, Texas, and was married the same year. He located in Sulphur Springs in 1874 and practiced his profession. He was initiated, passed and raised in Pleasant Hill Lodge No 269 in 1869 and received the Royal Arch and Council degrees in Gilmer chapter No 49 in 1871. He was knighted in Paris commandery No 9 in 1877 and was a charter member of DeMolay commandery No 20 at Greenville and McCoy commandery No 26 at Sulphur Springs. He is a past master of Sulphur Springs Lodge, Past High Priest of Sulphur Springs chapter, having been elected to both offices a number of times. He has been Eminent Commander of both commanderies of which eh was a charter member. He is a 32d Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Rose Croix chapter at Galveston. He attended the Grand Lodge for the first time in 1876 and has been present at every communication since that time. He was D. D. G. M. of the Seventh District for five or six years, has served on various committees. He was elected Junior Grand Warden in 1891 and Senior Grand Warden in 1892.
