George Edward Rice was the son of Lewis D. Rice and Sophia (Harris) Rice. George married Catharine Ann Joyce on February 23, 1851 in Hendricks County, Indiana. George and Catharine had 9 children - Savannah Eleanor "Ella" (Rice) Riley, Francis Marion Rice, Albert T. Rice, Sophia May (Rice) Alexander, Mary M. "Mollie" (Rice) Riley, Warren Tilford Monroe Rice, Sarah Emma (Rice) DeBolt, Ruth Ann (Rice) Burckhalter and an unknown infant. George was a member of Company K, 79th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. George was a trader and died of chronic lung and kidney problems. George's mother, Sophia (Harris) Rice and family were early settlers in Hendricks County, Indiana. The Harris family founded the town of Harrisburg and later changed the name to Brownsburg.
