William Francis A. Scholes of Smithfield died 22 November 2006, at his home of causes incident to age. He was 94. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on 13 November 1912, the youngest child of Walter Scholes and Phoebe Lurancy Adams Scholes. He spent his early years in the Rigby, Idaho area. He married Sarah Kathryn Chipman in the Logan Temple on 16 September 1938. He and Kathryn are the parents of 6 children. Katherine (Lyman) Godfrey of North Logan, Karen (LeRoy) Goodey of Clarkston, Utah, a son who died at birth, William Mark of South Jordan, Barbara Ann (David) Kent of Smithfield and Bonnie Anderson of Logan. They also had 2 Indian placement students, Jimmy Benally and Elsie Martinez, who lived with them for several years. William graduated from Utah State Agricultural College in 1938 and continued his education receiving a masters' degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He taught anatomy and physiology at the USAC in Logan from 1940-1949. He joined the LDS Church Education System and taught in the Richmond, Utah Seminary program, was director of the LDS Institue of Religion in Bakersfield, California and retired from the Sky View Seminary in Smithfield, Utah. During his CES Career he coordinated early morning seminaries in the Mojave Desert area and on the Island of Yap, Sipan and Palau. He was a strong supporter of education and influenced the lives of many students. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served as Bishop of the Smithfield First Ward, clerk in the Smithfield Stake Presidency, and as a sealer and ordinance worker in the Logan Temple. With his wife he served a mission as an educational representative in the Gilbert Islands (Kiribati) and Guam in the early eighties. Bill was a long-time scouter. He served as President of the Cache Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America for several years. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope awards. He served on the Smithfield City Council during the time when the city baseball park was being developed. He was a life-long learner and enjoyed many hobbies such as coin collecting, lapidary, leather working and crocheting. He enjoyed fishing and raising quarter horses. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He spent the last few years patiently and lovingly caring for his wife, Sally, in her illness. He is survived by his wife and children, 25 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a sister,Miriam Ricks, of Sugar City, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters, 3 brothers and an infant son. Funeral services were held 25 November 2006 at the Smithfield North Stake Center in Smithfield, Utah followed by burial in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
