Walter Scholes was born in Leeds,Yorkshire, England, the son of Francis and Sarah Jane Fishburn Scholes. In 1880, he came to America with his mother's brother, Robert Leeming Fishburn. The rest of his family came in 1882. The family settled in the Salt Lake Area. His father bought a band of sheep that Walter and his brothers herded in southeastern Idaho. In 1893, he received a call to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Hawaiian Islands. 21 Jun 1893, he married Phoebe Lurancy Adams in the Salt Lake Temple. 2 July 1893, he left for his mission. 28 April 1894, Phoebe too, received a mission call and joined Walter in Laie. They lived there until August 1896. Walter Adams, their oldest son was born there. The family lived for a time at Rigby, Idaho, where Walter was called to serve as a Bishop of the Clark Ward from 1918-1928. Walter and Phoebe were the parents of Walter Adams, Phoebe, Amy, Sarah, Alvin, Alma(who died at birth), Elizabeth, Miriam and Francis William. Walter was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served many happy years as the caretaker of the Logan Temple grounds. His wife, Phoebe passed away in 1934. He married Elizabeth Scholes 22 April 1935 in the Logan Temple. She was a devoted companion. After his retirement in 1946, they moved back to Rigby, Idaho where he could continue with his beloved hobby of gardening, with the help of his family. When the yards became too much, he moved a little house in, next door to his son, Alvin, and family in Clark. He passed away at his home in Clark, just 3 1/2 miles east of Rigby, on 10 July 1955, just 10 days shy of his 87th birthday. Funeral services were held 13 July 1955 in the Clark Ward with burial in the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.
