At his death, James was the oldest original citizen of Elloree. After the death of his parents he was raised by his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Jake Snider. When still a young man he located to a farm at Fort Motte, later moving to Sumter. He returned to Elloree in 1882 and became clerk in the store of his uncle, William Snider, the founder of Elloree. He served during this time as Assistant Postmaster, the office being in the store building. James later went into partnership in the merchandise business, which he operated for a number of years. He was elected mayor of the town when he was a young man, and was again elected, declining to serve. He was appointed postmaster at Elloree during McKinley's administration and served in this office 24 years, terminating in 1925. He joined the Santee Baptist Church when he was 20, and served as Chairman of the board of deacons for a number of years, until his death. For 36 years he was Superintendent of the Sunday school of this church. He was a member of Charity Lodge No.62, A.F.M.
