Maxine Bessie (Campbell) David, 101, of Decatur, IL, passed away on December 27, 2022, in Decatur, IL.

Maxine was born January 14, 1921, in Chesterville Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband (Virgil) and parents, Charles and Ursula (Hendrickson) Campbell, her sisters Lenore, Ruth, Dorothy and brother Woodrow. Three sisters died in childhood: Juanita, Marie and Hazel.

Maxine was born at home with her aunt Bessie's help, as the doctor couldn't get his horse and buggy through the snow drifts. She graduated from Arcola High School (1938) as an honor student and attended Eastern Illinois University (1939) on a scholarship for one year.

Maxine moved to Chicago in 1940 and worked as a secretary for the Pennsylvania Railroad during World War II, attended classes at DePaul University and became a lifelong Cubs fan.

She returned to Chesterville in 1947 and taught grades K-8th grade in a one room schoolhouse. The room was heated with a stove that burned coal and there were two outhouses, one for girls and the other for boys.

Maxine married Virgil Arthur David on August 14, 1947, in Chesterville and they moved to Decatur.

Virgil and Maxine raised three children- Mark (1948), Jennifer (1950) and Woodrow (1953). She was involved in PTA and served as president. She taught Sunday School at East Park Baptist Church for many years.

In 1960, Maxine went to work for the Decatur Public Schools as a secretary at Stephen Decatur High School and later she was secretary to the director of personnel for public schools until her retirement in 1986.

After retiring, she volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Saint Mary's Auxiliary in the surgery waiting room. She was involved with Saint Mary's quilting group and made over two dozen quilts. Maxine joined DAR and was active in the local chapter. She loved to read, especially history or historical non-fiction books. Her children and grandkids enjoyed her sharing life experiences growing-up in the Depression and World War II.

Maxine was an excellent seamstress and made clothing, curtains and a variety of Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. She was famous for her homemade chicken and noodles and red velvet cakes. Maxine loved her flower garden and would still be seen outside pulling weeds when she was 98 years old.

She is survived by her sons Mark (Monica) of Savoy and Woody (Cindy) of Mt Zion, and daughter Jennifer (Dick) Dunklau of Springfield and 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Services will be held on January 6, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Graceland Fairlawn Funeral Home with a visitation and hour prior. A burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery after services.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations in her name to Saint Mary's Auxiliary.
