William Ernest Pelley, 91, died on June 7.

He was born in New York City on Sept. 23, 1920 but was initially raised in northern Vermont. By the time he entered school his family had returned to the city of his birth, and he was raised there until he left to attend Mount Herman prep school in Northfield, Mass.

During his four years at Mount Herman he spent most of his time in the summers living with his aunt and uncle at their farm in nearby Hindsdale, N.H. After graduating from Mount Herman in 1937, he matriculated at the University of Michigan where he would earn his degree in geology.

As the nation entered the Second World War, he reported to his designated enlistment center in
Illinois but was not admited into the armed services on the basis of his being diagnosed with a heart murmur.

He was married to his first wife, the late Lorene M. Stein of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1945, just as his career as a field geologist with Sinclair Oil and Gas Company was getting underway, and he made his first home in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Subsequently he was transferred to Evansville, Ind. In 1952 he was hired by the Bankers Trust Company in New York City to join their petroleum finance department, and he moved to Ridgewood.

He embarked on a career in banking that would span the next 33 years and would see him become a senior vice president of the Bankers Trust Company in charge of its energy group.

He is survived by his children, Jennifer P. Jaremko of Warwick, N.Y., and Mark W. Pelley of Trumbull, Conn.; and his granddaughters, Ashely H. Wynne of Houston, Texas, Allison H. Mooney of Chevy Chase, Md., Lindsay E. Jaremko of Phoenix, Arix., Sarah M. Pelley of Boston, Mass. and Lauren E. Jaremko of Hoboken; and his great-grandchildren, Trip and Jody Wynne of Houston, Texas.

He was predeceased by his second wife of more than 10 years, E. Jean Antes of Williamsport, Pa.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 28 at the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood.

Arrangements are by CC Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood.

Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Endowment Fund, 722 East Ridge Ave., Ridgewood, NJ
