His paternal grandfather called him Pumpkin because of his red hair. It stuck, and over the years it was shortened to Punky and then Punk.

Former North Pole resident Nathan "Punk" Ray Coe, 63, of Elgin, Ore., died Sunday, July 6, 2003, after an extensive battle with diabetes and kidney failure.

Punk was born on June 1, 1940, the son of Harsley and Lee Ellen (Breshears) Coe in La Grande, Ore., and was raised in Elgin. In 1958, he graduated from Elgin High School and later attended Oregon Institute of Technology.

At the age of 15, he began his driving career and has driven from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Miami Beach, FL. He raised his family in North Pole, Alaska, and he returned to Elgin when he retired. He loved to hunt and fish, enjoyed reloading and was a fantastic photographer. He was a member of the Elgin Ward Latterday Saints Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Moose Lodge, Good Sam Club and Alaska Teamsters Union Local 959.

He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Linda Coe of Elgin; daughters, Cynthia Henderson of San Antonio; Shellie Holden of Wallowa, OR, and Melissa Gentleman of La Grande; 16 grandchildren; brother Kenneth Coe of Elgin; special fishing friend Tyson Evans; and many friends and family.

A memorial service was held on July 14 at 3 p.m. the Elgin Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
