The old Forney family story goes that Jacob Jr. went on a hunting trip to John's River and fell in love with the area. He also fell in love with Albert and Barbara Probst Corpening's daughter, Mary. They were married about 1801.

They were to have eleven children and in 1825, they built the house known as Cedar Grove.

According to research by Janet Spainhour Jinnette, Jacob Forney Jr.'s father was a French Huguenot. Jacob Sr. arrived in Philadelphia on 3 September, 1739. He moved from Lancaster PA to Lincoln (the Tryon) County, North Carolina. He married Maria Bergner, who had nursed him onboard ship after a trip to Germany in 1752.

Jacob Jr. and two of his brothers, Peter and Abram, all served in the American Revolution.
