From his obituary in the Morganton Star, 1887:
"It is with sadness that we note the death of our countryman Mr. Daniel J. Forney, which occurred at his home in this county last Sunday. He has been in rather delicate health for sometime previous to his death and when attacked with dysentery his constitution was too weak to rally.
"As a husband, father, citizen and farmer he was an exception. He has held the position for many years as the model farmer of the county, has filled many places of trust in the county, having represented the county one term in the legislature. He was an exemplary member of the Presbyterian Church, and when called to the Church Triuimphant had on the whole christian armor. Mr. Forney was about 70 years old when he died."
