DIED
ELIZA JANE GILBERT.
DIED – ON February 4, 1900, Mrs. Eliza Jane Gilbert, daughter of Mrs. Nancy McCartney and grand-daughter of Rev. Paul Egbert, one of the early pioneer Methodist ministers of this vicinity and a resident of Monona. She was born at South Bend, Indiana, Sept. 13, 1836, and was married at Monona, April 20th, 1854, to Mr. Matthew Gilbert, and for a short time was a resident of Monona, removing to the farm in Wagner Township 38 years ago where she has since lived until her death. Her husband died about eight months ago.
Mrs. Gilbert sprang from a Godly stock of Methodists and was carefully trained in the ways of religion from which she never departed. She had been in feeble health for many years and a complete invalid for seven or eight years, needing the care and attention of the family constantly, and was tenderly nursed by her son Frank until her end came. She was entirely resigned and patiently waited for the final summons. She leaves two sons [William and Frank] and many relatives. The funeral was largely attended from the Gooding church, Rev. J.J. Littler conducting the service.
The poet says, "The graves grow thicker, and life's ways more bare, as years on years go by.
